Bidhya Bhandari- probable first female President of Nepal
Joined as a cadre of Nepal Communist Party (Marxist Leninist) two decades back, her charisma led her to be the vice chairperson of CPN (UML ). She has accumulated experience of working as Defence minister of Nepal Government. The Standing Committee meeting held in Baluwatar on 26th October 2015 decided to put forward her name as a candidate for presidential election which opened the door for Bidhya Devi Bhandari to be the first woman president of Nepal.

Currently at the age of 54 yrs, Bidhya Bhandari was born in 1961 AD (2018 BS) in Guranse, Bhojpur district of Nepal in the Pande family. She was the daughter of Ram Bahadur Pande and Mithila Pande. Gyanendra Bahadur Karki- the leader of Nepali Congress is her brother. Her grandfather was the head of village. The political environment in house urged Bidhya to seek her career in politics. So with a vow to act for ending the suppression of marginalized people and women, she devoted herself in Communist politics. After the establishment of Nepal Communist Party (Marxist Leninist) in 2035, she became actively involved as a Red Guard. It was during this period that she met with Madan Bhandari for the first time in the room of Himal Dhan Rai in Bhojpur. In 2037 BS, Bidhya was offered the proposal for marriage with Madan Bhandari and she accepted the proposal. It was in 2039 BS that Bidhya got married with her husband Madan Bhandari.
Talking about Bidhya Bhandari daughters, she gave birth to Ushakiran and Nishakusuk. Ushakiran was born on August 16 1996 and Nishakusuk was born on June 29 1982. She lost her husband- Madan Bhandari when he succumbed to death after being victim of notorious Dash Dhunga Accident on May 16 1993.
Who is Bidhya Bhandari?
She is the top political figure among contemporary women leaders. None of other women have as much influence in their party. Likewise, no other women have reached to her hierarchy in their party. She is among top 4 existing political leaders from CPN (UML). She finished her school education from Shree Bidyodaya Secondary School, Bhojpur.
Bidhya gained her popularity in politics after demise of her husband. The crucial event for her life was the victory in 2050 BS election against the then president of Nepali Congress – Krishna Prasad Bhattarai from Kathmandu. Her popularity increased with the victory in 2051 election against the then Speaker of the parliament- Daman Nath Dhungana. In 2054 BS, she got the opportunity of handling Ministry of Population and Environment while she was elected as Central Committee member in the same year. She became Defense Minister in 2066 BS while she was elected as Vice Chairperson of the party from Butwal Convention 2065 BS. She was reelected as vice chairperson from Kathmandu Convention 2071.
